Un'apertura alare di poco più di otto metri, una lunghezza di sette metri e dieci ed un Lycoming da 260 CV nel muso: ecco l'SF.260. l'unico vero « sistema d'armi » nella categoria degli aerei leggeri.
Inconfondibile per la finezza delle linee ed impressionante per le sue caratteristiche, l'aereo della SIAI Marchetti offre una possibilità di impiego talmente varia da non avere precedenti nella storia dell'aviazione. Dal turismo all'addestramento, dall'attacco alla ricerca e soccorso: una varietà di complessi compiti che l'SF.260 può ricoprire senza difficoltà a costi di acquisto e di impiego che non trovano confronti sul mercato.
Un motore diffuso in ogni angolo del mondo, la possibilità di operare da strisce semipreparate e l'estrema semplicità di manutenzione fanno dell'aereo un'allettante tentazione anche per quegli operatori che annoverano nelle loro flotte costosissimi aerei specializzati. Non a caso l'SF 260 vola attualmente in diciannove paesi del globo a tutte le latitudini ed in ogni condizione climatica.
Potrebbe sembrare che su di una macchina così piccola ci sia ben poco da dire oltre ai dati dimensionali ed alle caratteristiche, ma non è così: nelle pagine che seguono abbiamo annotato alcuni episodi della già lunga vita dell'SF.260, dai concetti ispiratori da cui l'aereo trae le sue origini, agli avventurosi e stupendi voli promozionali, sulla rotta transatlantica o sulla via di Marco Polo o al di là delle Ande peruviane. Sono esperienze narrate dai piloti che con soli 260 CV hanno compiuto con estrema fiducia e tranquillità imprese che preoccupavano comandanti di aerei commerciali.
Ogni volta l'SF.260 è riuscito e, se qualcosa ha fatto cilecca, è bastato rimboccarsi le maniche della camicia ed impugnare un semplice cacciavite: anche nel folto della jungla malese e sulle sabbie infuocate del deserto egiziano, mai un'avaria che non potesse essere riparata rapidamente sul posto.
Un aereo dunque che può essere impiegato senza difficoltà anche dall'operatore più modesto e che può rendere i servigi di macchine ben più costose e Spesso di discutibile efficienza su taluni ambienti operativi.

Its engine is well known in every corner of the world, it can operate from semi-prepared strips and its maintenance is extremely simple: all this makes this airplane highly attracting even for those operators that can afford the most expensive specialized aircraft. It's no wonder then that the SF.260 is now flying in nineteen countries in the world in all sorts of climates.
Those were not casual and isolated sales, as each time the italian airplane had to beat the most qualified competitors, and each time its victory was due only to its qualities.
It could seem that little could be said about such a small airplane, except its dimensions and performances, but it isn't so. In the following pages we have reported some events in the SF.260 already long history, from the basic concepts which originated it, to its adventuring and magnificent promotional flights, across the Allantic or along Marco Polo's route or above the peruvian Andes. These experiences are told by the pilots who, with only 260 HP, could accomplish in all security feats that would worry an airliner commander.
Each time the SF.260 succeeded or, if something went wrong, it was enough to roll up one's sleeves and use a simple screwdriver. Even in the deep of the malayan jungles or on the egyptian desert's hot sands, there have never been troubles that couldn't be quickly fixed on the spot.
It is therefore an airplane that can be employed without difficulties even by the most modest operator, and that, in certain operational profiles, can supplant much more expensive and often inuch more troublesome aircraft.
