Like the poster, the printed public notice is a faithful mirror of its time: it combines elements of social history, nostalgia and aesthetics and it is sought after by the collector and the connoisseur. This book, the first full treatment of the subject, presents a comprehensive illustrated study of the public notice as a social instrument. In an extensive commentary, and with some 265 repro-ductions, the author traces the development of the notice from its beginnings as a command or proclamation to the threats, blandishments and exhortations of modern times.
Subject matter covers a wide field; one item offers cash rewards for Indian scalps, another inveighs against Sunday railroad trips; others warn variously of the dangers of cholera and the risks incurred by those who allow their goats to eat their landlord's crops. Twentieth-century specimens include strike notices and German proclamations from occupied English territory in 1941.
Like posters, public notices convey their period not only in subject matter but also in style and execution. Even beyond their social history content, the illustrations in
this book command attention for their design and layout.
For the connoisseur of printed ephemera the collection presents a striking visual history of typographic display. Many of the examples are museum rarities.
In addition to printed announcements, a sprinkling of wood and metal notices are offered. These include classic railway station items ('None but the Company's horses to drink at this trough) and a number of interesting oddities ("This wall is the entire property of the County of Middlesex').The book features examples from all parts of the English-speaking world; the United States and Great Britain are the main sources, but there are also contributions from Australia, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, Kenya and and Hong Kong.
With his background as a writer, designer, and editorial/printing consultant, Maurice Rickards has written extensively on the interplay of graphics and social history. This book follows his recently successful Rise and Fall of the Poster and Where They Lived in London. He is also a member of the Society of Industrial Artists and Designers.
