Christian Deydier, the author of Chinese Bronzes (1980), presents a new and richly detailed study of archaic bronze vessels, drawing on the recent archaeological discoveries that have significantly changed our knowledge of the art of bronze in ancient China. The book covers the first two dynasties, the Xia (21st-16th century BCE), which saw the birth of bronzeware, and Shang (16th-9th century BCE) in which the art reached its apex in China.
